Richard Diebenkorn (1922–93) was an American painter widely recognized for his contributions to both Abstract Expressionism and the development of color field painting. Born in Portland, Oregon and raised in San Francisco, California, Diebenkorn studied art at Stanford University, where his exposure to European modernism—especially the works of Matisse and Cézanne—profoundly influenced him.
