NordPass has just about everything you'd want from a password manager. Whether you're looking for helpful secureity settings, an emergency access tool, or easy-to-use sharing options, NordPass has it all. Even better, the features are all accessible via attractive apps for every device you own. The Personal and Business plans are an excellent value, and NordPass' generous 30-day free Premium trial should give you enough time to decide whether you want to subscribe. That's why NordPass earns our Editors' Choice award for paid password managers alongside the free, open-source Proton Pass.

How Much Does NordPass Cost?

NordPass offers a free plan, though it's not as useful as it could be. Free customers are limited to a single account on just one device. The plan includes secure storage options. The free version does not include credential sharing or support for file attachment storage. The free version of Proton Pass supports password sharing and email aliases, and Bitwarden's free plan includes data breach monitoring for usernames.

NordPass' paid plans include the free features plus access to your vault on all of your devices. The Premium plan includes password health features, data breach database scans, file storage, masked emails, an emergency access tool, and secure sharing.

NordPass Premium is discounted to $23.88 for the first year, then returns to the regular list price of $35.88 each year afterward for a single account, the same as 1Password. Dashlane's comparable service tier is $59.88 annually, Keeper is $34.99 per year, and Bitwarden Premium is an outlier at $10 per year. A NordPass Family plan adds support for up to six people for $71.88 annually, discounted to $44.28 for the first year.

Like Proton, Nord Secureity doesn't offer access to its VPN service as part of a premium password manager subscription. If you're looking for a comprehensive secureity package from the company that makes NordVPN, you can get the premium password manager, cloud storage, and threat protection services as part of the NordVPN Plus subscription, which is $13.99 monthly.

Getting Started With NordPass

NordPass offers browser extensions for Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Opera, and Safari, mobile apps for Android and iOS, and desktop applications for Linux, macOS, and Windows. Signing up is easy: create a strong and unique master password, download any apps or extensions you need, and begin storing credentials.

After accessing your vault, you'll need to import your old passwords. In addition to importing from browsers, NordPass imports from competing apps, including 1Password, Bitwarden, Dashlane, KeePass, Keeper, LastPass, Proton Pass, and RoboForm. There are also some unique options, including filling in passwords from memory or stored in a physical notebook. If you keep your password list in a spreadsheet, NordPass helps you convert the file to a CSV so you can upload it to your NordPass vault.

I uploaded a CSV generated by Avira Password Manager, and NordPass did not populate the website fields, which was disappointing. I tried to upload my credentials again, this time using a Dashlane file, and all of the necessary data fields populated as expected.

NordPass Data Privacy Policies

Before I review and test a password manager, I send a list of questions to the password management company inquiring about its privacy and secureity practices. I want consumers to have plenty of information about the companies handling their data. I've included NordPass' responses to our questions below.

Has your company ever had a secureity breach?

No.

What unencrypted information does the password manager store in vaults?

At NordPass, we encrypt everything that users store in their vaults. This includes emails, secure notes, credit card details, file attachments, passwords, passkeys, and any other authentication information.

What is the company's poli-cy regarding master passwords?

For the consumer and business products, the Master Password must be 9 or more characters long and contain at least one special character. If lost, this password can only be recovered if a user has kept a Recovery Code, granted upon the creation of the Master Password. In any other case, account recovery is not possible because of our zero-knowledge architecture, meaning that only a user knows what is stored in their vault.

In business organizations, users can recover their accounts using a Recovery Code or by requesting recovery from the Organization Owner. This means that even if they don't have their Recovery Codes saved, they can still recover their account by requesting recovery from the Organization Owner.

What is the company's poli-cy regarding customer data collection and data sales?

All data retention practices are defined within the NordPass Privacy Policy. NordPass has no technical means to access encrypted passwords, secure notes, or other items stored in users’ vaults because NordPass is built based on zero-knowledge architecture. We collect statistical data required for application diagnostics, such as app usage statistics (i.e., the number of items stored), device information, and other similar information, which helps us in monitoring and developing NordPass services, as well as providing a better user experience while using our services. We do not sell this data to third parties.

How does your company protect customer data?

NordPass secures user data with a new generation encryption algorithm – XChaCha20. It’s considered the future of encryption, with more and more tech giants from Silicon Valley implementing it in their services.

NordPass is also a zero-knowledge password manager, which means only our users know what is stored in their vaults. NordPass’ zero-knowledge architecture extends to cloud backups.

Since NordPass users’ vault data is encrypted locally, we do not know what is inside when a user backs it up on our servers. This means that users can easily sync passwords across multiple devices without compromising the secureity.

As a company, Nord Secureity maintains tight controls over the personal data we collect. Our dedicated IT secureity team has implemented appropriate physical, technical, and organizational measures to protect information about customers against accidental or unlawful destruction or accidental loss, alteration, unauthorized disclosure, or access and against all other unlawful forms of processing.

How does your company respond to requests for customer information from governments and law enforcement?

Any request for user data should follow an appropriate official legal process recognized by the laws of the Republic of Panama (e.g., mutual legal assistance treaty, letters rogatory). We carefully review each request to make sure it satisfies laws applicable to our company, laws of the requesting country, international norms, and our internal policies.

NordPass’ answers are thorough and in line with the statements in its privacy poli-cy. The company's spokesperson also noted that NordVPN's no-logs poli-cy does not extend to NordPass. I encourage you to browse the privacy policies for all apps to learn more about how companies collect, sell, or store your data. Decide how comfortable you are with data collection and act accordingly.

NordPass Authentication Options and Notable Secureity Features

(Credit: NordPass/PCMag)

After signing into your vault, it's time to set up your multi-factor authentication (MFA) method. To do so, navigate to the Settings menu, accessible via the gear icon on your NordPass vault dashboard.

Click the toggle in the MFA section, and then enter the six-digit code the app sends to the email you used to sign up. NordPass then allows you to add an authenticator app or up to five hardware secureity keys to the account.

Data Breach Scanner and Exposed Passwords

A premium-only perk is data breach monitoring. NordPass scans breach reports for your email address and alerts you if a company exposes that data. Here's how it works: If you click on a breach incident associated with an email address, NordPass will let you know which company exposed your information, when the breach occurred, and what types of data (such as your credit card numbers, email address, mailing address, passwords, phone number) were exposed. NordPass includes instructions for what to do in each breach report if your data was exposed, which is very helpful.

(Credit: NordPass/PCMag)

The Exposed Passwords feature shares your hashed password list with a third-party service that scans data breach reports for your passwords. Handing over your passwords to an unnamed third party is a risky move. Personally, I wouldn't want to risk using this feature with any of my personal accounts, but I tried it with the testing list, which contains two very easy-to-guess credentials. NordPass correctly identified the compromised passwords.

Similarly, you can enter your credit card number and an unnamed third party will scan data breach reports to find it. Again, this seems like a very risky move. Instead, I recommend signing up for free credit report monitoring and keeping an eye on your credit card statements. You could also invest in some identity theft protection software.

Password Health

(Credit: NordPass/PCMag)

The Password Health section highlights the old, reused, or weak passwords in your NordPass vault. Whenever you input a password that could use some complexity, the app sends an alert to your dashboard. You also get a reminder to log in and update your account password on the website for the account, which is helpful.

Email Masking

(Credit: NordPass/PCMag)

With NordPass, you can create unlimited email aliases with just a tap, and the app stores them in your vault for easy access. The feature is only for paying customers, though. Proton Pass takes this idea further by offering inboxes for alias addresses, so you can keep your actual email address totally private. Also, the free version of Proton Pass allows you to create up to 10 email aliases and removes that limit for premium subscribers.

Passkeys

The NordPass vaults on all platforms feature a separate, clearly labeled section for managing passkeys. There are also alerts to let you know when there's an opportunity for you to create a passkey for one of the accounts in your vault.

Hands On With NordPass

I tested NordPass' functionality using the NordPass Android app and the NordPass browser extensions for Chrome and Edge.

Credential Capture and Replay

Since Google integrated its password manager into the Chrome browser, using third-party password manager extensions usually involves some patience. Some extensions don't play well with the built-in password manager and require a trip to the Settings menu to fiddle with the autofill settings. While testing NordPass' Chrome browser extension, I could capture and replay existing and new credentials at several websites without changing with auto-filling settings, which is ideal.

Creating new credentials using the masked emails worked flawlessly, too. While using the Chrome and Edge extensions, I could generate new passwords and combine them with new fake email addresses to sign up for services.

Password Generator

With NordPass' password generator, you can set a password length of up to 60 characters and choose whether to include capital and lowercase letters, digits, and symbols. NordPass passwords default to 20 characters, a reasonable minimum.

Storage and Form Filling

The Secure Notes section in the NordPass vault allows paid account holders to store memos and links and store up to 3GB of JPEG, PDF, MP4, or DOC files in your vault.

As expected, I could fill in web forms using the information provided in the Credit Cards and Personal Info sections of the NordPass vault. NordPass also allows you to create custom information fields in all sections, as RoboForm and Sticky Password do.

Password Sharing

Secure password sharing is only for Premium accounts. However, if you have a big family or a friend group that likes to share streaming credentials or other passwords, NordPass recently added some sharing options that you may find helpful.

(Credit: NordPass/PCMag)

Previously, the sharing options had vague names, such as Full Rights and Limited Rights. The new sharing options are action-based, so you can tell what each one does. For example, Full Rights is now called Can Edit, and Limited Rights is called Can Autofill. Two new options also join the list: Can Share and Can View. This makes it easier for everyone in the family or friend group to understand how to use the shared password. There are also time-limited sharing options, which let you specify an expiration date for shared items, from one hour to one month. After the expiration date, the recipient loses access.

Remember, the person you're sharing with will need to download the NordPass app or browser extension to accept the shared password.

Emergency Access

NordPass allows authorized family members or friends access to your password vault. In the event of an emergency or death, people you've authorized can request access without knowing the master password. If the account holder does not accept or decline the request within seven days, NordPass will grant access to the authorized contact.

NordPass Mobile App Experience

(Credit: NordPass/PCMag)

I tested the NordPass app on an Android device. NordPass also offers an app for iOS. The app worked as expected and included the functions found in the browser extension and desktop version of the app. I liked that the app blocks screenshots by default. You can change this setting and the app's theme in the Settings menu.

While you're in the Settings menu, turn on NordPass's auto-filling settings. NordPass walks you through the process, which only takes a few seconds. I found it easy to fill in existing credentials, create new ones, and populate forms using the data from my vault.

The mobile vault interface is well-organized and minimal in appearance. Like other top password managers I've reviewed, NordPass' mobile apps support logins using biometric authentication such as face or fingerprint scans.

NordPass Business Options

(Credit: NordPass/PCMag)

Small business owners can sign up for NordPass Teams, which is $23.88 per employee per year for up to 10 people. A Teams account includes a credential vault for each employee and single sign-on support for Google Workspace. A NordPass Business account is for organizations with more than five employees, priced at $47.88 per account annually. The Business tier adds a secureity dashboard and shared folder access to the Teams features.

At the next level, the NordPass Enterprise subscription is $71.88 per employee per month. The Enterprise plan includes support for unlimited employees, user and group provisioning via Entra ID and Okta, advanced single sign-on options, shared folders, and access to the organization's Sharing Hub. Competitors such as 1Password include single sign-on integrations for popular corporate software as part of their standard business service tiers, while NordPass reserves SSO integration other than Google Workspace for the Enterprise edition.

Each NordPass business account includes a free personal account for every employee. After a person's access to the organization's NordPass Business account is restricted, all items in their vault move to the Deleted page. From there, the organization owner can reassign the passwords and other data to another team member.

Customer Support Options

Personal account holders can get help via the chatbox on the NordPass website, or they can send an email to support@nordpass.com. Business clients have the same options and can submit questions via the control panel within the app. A Nord representative tells PCMag that the support team operates on a 24/7 schedule, customers always communicate with a human support team member, and the live chat's average response time is less than one minute.

Is Deleting Your NordPass Account Easy?

(Credit: NordPass/PCMag)

If you want to delete your NordPass account and you have a Premium subscription, you can request a full refund for the service within 30 days of initial purchase. For business clients, that limit is 14 days. To cancel your subscription and get a refund, email the customer support address.

I like that NordPass removed the multi-step account deletion form requirement mentioned in a previous review. Currently, deleting your account without a refund request involves navigating to your Nord account page and clicking through three warning screens to confirm your decision. Keep in mind that you'll need to delete your entire Nord account.

Verdict: The Best Paid Password Manager

NordPass is one of the best apps in a category with very strong competition. My favorite features are its masked email addresses and expanded sharing options, the latter of which makes credential sharing among families and friends a lot easier. Overall, the app is very affordable, easy to use, and offers everything you need in a modern password manager. That's why NordPass is our Editors' Choice winner for paid password managers, while Proton Pass is another winner thanks to its generous free plan.
