Pop songs translated into Shakespeare. It would be fun to give students a bunch of these and have them match them or translate them and then have them take a stab at turning a song they like into a sonnet. A good fun way to teach students iambic pentameter and the structure of sonnets. jj

Some teachers shy away from teaching texts other than traditionally canonical texts because they are afraid that the text is irrelevant. One excellent way to assuage this fear and get students reading a wider variety of texts is to supplement non-fiction and novels. In our case, it may mean pairing A-BC with another novel about what it means to experience live as a Chinese American, like "The Chinese in America."
