Palette Art Classroom Management Point System The “Class Palettes” art classroom management system is a 5 point-based system loosely based on the book “Classroom Management for Art, Music, and PE Teachers” by Michael Linsin. In my design, each paint splotch represents student behavior that is expected during the class period. Beginning with how students enter the class, during the class and how they get ready to leave. I have adapted the list to fit my art classroom and it is primarily used with my elementary and middle school classes. This is in addition to the other classroom management tools we use: Art Room Rules, Art Jobs, Give Me 5, End of Class Tasks, and Voice O Meter. System Includes: -PDF: Full instructions with 6 small sets of palettes and paint splotches PLUS + Art Notes for Parents- Positive Note and Behavior Alert included -POSTER: Visual reminder of the 5 expected behaviors to earn points--Art Classroom Management Palette System Poster -2 file sizes of Palettes and Paint Splotches Whole Class or Small Group Option There are two options to approach the point system: as a class or as small groups (tables). Either way the maximum points earned per class is 5. The goal is for the class to earn a complete palette with all 5 colors. Print the “Palette System Poster” on tabloid size paper (11×17”) and display. This can be a competition between classes to see who makes it to a certain score or you could reward each class to reaching to a certain score within a specific time period. For example, if your school is on 9-week terms and you see students one time per week, the maximum points earned could be 45. Any class that earns a total of 45 points could win a special art day or popcorn part! You don’t have to make it cost anything-be creative with what you have. Make sure to keep record with different classes or groups. Class Option: With the class option, it is the entire class that earns the total of 5 points each class period. Print one tabloid size (11×17”) “LARGE palette and paint splotches” set to use during the class. This is the file named “PaletteandPaintSplotches_LARGE.png”. Laminate it, adhere a set of small Velcro on the back of each paint splotch to attach to palette, and hang it on a white board or a bulletin board. Small Group Option: With the small group option, it is the small groups within a class that earn points. I would suggest grouping by tables. Students will hold each other accountable as they work together to earn a complete palette. Print a set of “MEDIUM palette and paint splotches” for each group. Six medium size sets are included in this PDF on Page 3-5 in addition to the PNG file-This is the file named “PaletteandPaintSplotches_MEDIUM.png”. Laminate them, adhere a set of small Velcro on the back of each paint splotch to attach to palette, and hang it on a white board, a bulletin board or display at each table. Either keep the set at the tables and allow a responsible student to place the paint splotches on the palette or keep it on the board for the teacher to place the paint splotches. Remember that the key to success with any classroom management tool is CONSISTENT use and reinforcement of proper behavior and procedures. © Michelle C.
