The “Revolução dos Cravos” (Carnation Revolution) of 25 April 1974 brought an abrupt end to 41 years of the Estado Novo regime and 48 years of brutal dictatorship. With serious opposition political parties banned and dissenters underground or in jail, it was left to disaffected army captains and soldiers across the country to refuse orders and challenge the regime. Charles B. Burdick (1927-1998) grew up in San Jose, California where he attended Lincoln High School before enlisting in the United States Army during World War II. After serving in the Army, Burdick enrolled at San Jose State College in 1946. He graduated with a B.A. in History in 1949, and obtained his Ph.D. from Stanford University in 1954. He joined SJSU's History Department in 1957, and became department chair in 1976. Duncan, a longtime professor of natural sciences at San Jose State College, mentored Patricia Carpio Whiting as she worked as a secretary in the Field Studies program from 1964 until his death in 1966. Inspired by an unusually close and warm friendship between student and mentor, Duncan supported Whiting’s mother and siblings with the gift of his home and the funding of their college tuitions with his estate. Edith Harvey Heron, the daughter of William S. and Ada Heron, was born January 2, 1895, in San Jose, California, After graduating from San Jose High School in 1914, she attended San Jose Normal School and graduated in 1918. Following a short-term teaching career in art therapy, she attended the California School of Arts and Crafts for two years (1920-22) and in 1929 earned a B. On February 19, 1942 President Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066 providing broad powers for the War Department to create exclusion zones and to initiate an evacuation program for the Western Defense Command (WDC). Under the leadership of General John Dewitt of the WDC, the Civil Affairs Division (CAD) and the Wartime Civil Control Administration (WCCA) were created in order to provide for the transition of voluntary evacuees, enemy aliens and United States citizens alike, from exclusion areas to other parts of the country. Friedolin Kessler, (1913-1995), was the resident artist of the Almaden Quick Silver camp hired to document life in the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). His forte was linoleum cuts, but he also worked with oil and acrylic, as well as having talent in wood art and mosaics. In 1938 he took a bicycle trip visiting every California Mission in the state, which he sketched and photographed and later produced beautiful linoleum cuts of each mission. The resulting prints were exhibited around California and at the World’s Fair in Treasure Island and the Palace of the Legion of Honor in San Francisco. …

The George E. Stone Photographic Collection, a three-volume set titled "Ivories, Sculptures and Paintings," documents Italian artwork prior to World War II (c.1941). Stone visited museums in Florence, Italy, and photographed selected early religious artworks, particularly, renderings of "the Holy Mother", saints, angels, and Christ as an infant and the resurrection. This three volume set is presented in six portfolios and includes 94 photographs: b&w, 16x36 cm.-42 x 24 cm, mounted on 51x41 boards.

The Gerald L. French Photograph Collection documents the San Jose State College West Coast School of Nature Study program held in Death Valley in 1958. Gerald L. French, then a San Jose State College student, attended this program and donated this collection to the university. The images document the activities, events, and participants on this field trip. The digital collection consists of forty-two 4x5 inch negatives and twenty-seven 35 mm color slides. Janet Gray Hayes papers document her political life while serving on the San Jose City Council and as the first female Mayor of the City San Jose from 1970-1982. In 1970 she was elected to the San Jose City Council, where she served as the Vice Mayor under Norman Mineta, before running for the office of mayor in 1974.
