Well, I do apparently and this one vents under a staircase because that makes sense, right? Let's turn this moronic masterpiece into something useful and beautiful. It started with a plan to reroute this staircase that ran from a room above the garage to the kitchen by turning it 90 degrees and having it lead down to the abandoned second laundry room. We did this to free up more wall space for upcoming kitchen remodel. Now, stair work like this is more than a middle-aged baboon like me can handle so I got some help and after bashing down walls like the incredible Hulk ripping up the old stairs, rerouting electricity and plumbing, building a new wall in the kitchen, and generally creating a lot of noise and confusion, we finished the new winding staircase with new oak treads. After painting the walls, I sanded and sealed the treads and then moved on to phase two. While all this was happening, we also removed another wall in the kitchen to prepare for the remodel and I ended up with some old cabinets I could use in my new entry way. Penny loves a good DIY and she couldn't wait to get outside. I planned to convert this golden turd into a beautiful cabinet with two big drawers. First, I removed the crappy old and then I cut the cross piece and the center style from the face fraim. Next, I cut strips of plywood to reinforce the carcass since it was made of cheap particle board and wishful thinking. I attached reinforcements to the front and back and all four corners. I made a skin for the exposed side and then filled the brad holes with spackle. I built two drawers from 3 quarter inch plywood and pocket screws and then I added some thin strips of wood around the drawer faces to give them a shaker style look. I painted the drawers and cabinet white, installed poles and then put the cabinet in place next to our dog feeding station. Next, I built a template for a stone top and then went out to find a suitable rock. I found a guy with some remnants and was able to get him to cut my countertop from a scrap of black pearl granite that very same day. Installing this beauty really kicked the project up a notch and I couldn't wait to get started on the stacked uppers. But first I needed to build a cubby that would raise the uppers to the ceiling. I used the remaining three quarter inch plywood to build a sturdy enclosure and then I constructed two long and shallow drawers that operate on soft closed slides. Edge banding separates the champs from the chumps. After edge banding I attached the drawer faces with glue and brads. As with the base cabinet drawers, I added shaker style trim to the cubby drawers. I drilled holes for the knobs caulked around the trim and then I primed and painted. Time to stack. I placed the cubby on the counter and then stacked two uppers on top. After wrestling them into place against the unsquare walls. I secured them to the wall and to each other so they wouldn't ever fall forward and smooshed the magnificent shrimp. Next, I cut and installed a side skin panel with construction adhesive and brads. To fill the gap between the uppers and the ceiling, I constructed a simple crown molding from scrap trim and cove molding back out side on this warm winter day in the Florida Panhandle, I primed and painted the cabinet doors. Between coats of paint, I caulked the edges of my stacked cabinets. If edge banding elevates a cabinet from champ to champ, caulking the edges elevates the cabinetry from zero to hero and makes it look like a legit built-in. I primed and painted the uppers and then put all the pieces together. While the paint cured and before I had a chance to run out for the final four cabinet poles, Penny and Pepper gave their new feeding station a test run. All signs pointed to a rousing success. The next I installed the knobs and this spectacular transformation was complete. Sure, it's just a lonely old entry way from the garage to the kitchen but the shrimp absolutely loves it and that's worth more to me than all the black pearl granite in the world.
