The Cooperative Institute for Earth System Research and Data Science, CIESRDS, is the current cooperative agreement between CU Boulder and NOAA
About half of CIRES' researchers work side-by-side with NOAA federal colleagues and others in the David Skaggs Research Center in Boulder, Colorado, and several other locations. These individuals are key to many aspects of NOAA’s mission-critical work.
Our NOAA-based research is guided and sustained by a cooperative agreement competed every 10 years and funded by Congress through NOAA. Our current NOAA grant is titled the Cooperative Institute for Earth System Research and Data Science, and CIESRDS is part of CIRES at the University of Colorado Boulder. CIESRDS research is organized into eight key themes:
- Future Atmosphere
- Climate Science and Prediction
- Earth System Data Science, Stewardship, and Application
- Regional Science and Applications
- Scientific Outreach, Education, and Diversity
- Space Weather Science and Prediction
- Weather Research and Forecasting
- Ecosystem Science and Prediction
This partnership between CU Boulder and NOAA fosters fundamental and applied research in diverse disciplines, it provides NOAA with access to university intellectual depth and resources, and gives students direct experience in operational and mission-focused research.
