This painting was made by the English School for educational purposes. It is called Defeat of the Spanish Armada and quite literally shows what the title means. We see ships breaking apart after the Spanish failed to invade England. There are survivors floating on broken parts of the ship.

The spectacular but unsuccessful attempt by King Philip II of Spain to invade Elizabethan England in 1588. The Armada is for the English the classic foreign threat to their country and a powerful icon of national identity.

The Spanish Armada

A massive Spanish fleet, known as the "Invincible Armada," set sail from Lisbon on May 19, 1588 on a mission to secure control of the English Channel and transport a Spanish invasion army to Britain from the Netherlands. The Invincible Armada consisted of 130 ships and carried 2,500 guns and 30,000 men, two-thirds of them soldiers.
