Grading Periods (Admins) Video Script

In this video, you will learn about accessing, creating, and managing grading periods and grading period sets in Canvas.

In Account Navigation, click the Grading link. If your account already includes grading period sets, you will see the grading period set names and terms here. Grading periods are added to grading period sets and are organized by start dates. To narrow your search for grading period sets, filter by a specific term or type a grading period or term name into the Search field. To view all the grading periods within a set, click the drop-down arrow next to the grading period name you’d like to view. You will see each grading period name and assigned dates.

To add a new grading period set, click the Add Set of Grading Periods button. Type a name for the new grading period set and choose an unassociated term. You can also choose to set weights for individual grading periods. Selecting the Weighted Grading Periods checkbox displays a grading percentage field in each grading period set. Additionally, if you want to allow users to view the Total column when they view the All Grading Periods drop-down option in the Grades page or Gradebook, select the Display totals for All Grading Periods option check box. Then, click the Create button.

To edit a grading period set name or term, click the Edit icon and make your changes. To remove a set, click the Delete icon and confirm deletion.

Within a grading period set, you can manage the individual grading periods. To add a grading period to a set, click the Add Grading Period link. Enter a name for the grading period and start and end dates. The close date is the date when instructors can no longer edit grades after the grading period has ended. By default, the close date will autofill to match the end date. To adjust the close date, click the calendar icon or enter a new date manually. If you chose to set weights for individual grading periods, enter the weight percentage. Then, click the Save button.

If you need to edit an existing grading period, click the Edit icon. To remove the grading period, click the Delete icon.

Within the Grading Periods tab, you can also view concluded grading period sets. Grading period sets should only be used once to ensure reports stay accurate once a term ends.
