Mastery Paths (Instructors) Video Script

In this video, you will learn about creating and using the Mastery Paths feature in Canvas. To learn more about this topic, visit the Canvas Guides at guides.canvaslms.com. Additionally, permissions vary between users and institutions, so what you see in this video may be different from what you see in Canvas.

Before you can use Mastery Paths, a Canvas admin must enable the Mastery Paths feature option in account settings and you’ll need to organize your course content into Modules. To help with organization, module items can be indented to show the Mastery Paths order. By default, graded assignments, discussions, and quizzes are enabled as conditional content options that can be used in setting up Mastery Paths. Pages, however, must manually be enabled to use as conditional content. To enable a page for Mastery Paths, open the page, click the Edit button, and select the Allow in mastery paths checkbox. The page will now display within Mastery Paths as a conditional content item.

To create a MasteryPath, select a supported foundational content item required for all students from the Modules Index Page. Click the Settings icon then click the Mastery Paths link. In the Mastery Paths tab, you can set up specific content in three scoring ranges. After the foundational assignment has been submitted and graded, the student’s score designates which conditional item(s) will be assigned as a learning path. Each scoring range defaults to a percentage of the total point value in the assignment. You can adjust certain scores by clicking in the field and changing the value. To add an existing course item as conditional content, click the Add button in a range. A content window will appear showing all available conditional release items. You can search for content in the search field or filter items by type. When you’ve selected the course content, click the Add Items button. If you add more than one content item to a range, an And button appears between the items showing that the assignments must both be completed with an achieved score in the given range. Click the And button again to change it to an Or button. Now students can choose which content item they’d like to complete within the conditional path. Each scoring range can hold up to three individual course items or three assignment groups. Once content is added, click the And/Or symbols to mix and match conditional requirements or drag and drop content within a range to reorder the items. To individually edit, move, or delete an item from a conditional path, click the item’s Options menu. To delete multiple items, click the appropriate check marks in the items you’d like to delete, then press the Delete key on your keyboard. When you’re finished adding Mastery Paths, click the Save button.

Once you save your Mastery Paths content, a Mastery Path link shows on the Modules page. Click this link to revisit the Mastery Paths configuration page to review or make changes to your conditional content at any time. Each conditional content item also displays the appropriate Mastery Paths range.

Once your Mastery Paths conditional items have been added, set each conditional item as a differentiated assignment. To differentiate an item, open the assignment and click the Edit button. In the Assign to field, click the Remove icon next to Everyone and select the Mastery Paths link. Now this content will only display for students with scores that fall within the designated range. To finish, save your changes.
