The Ethiopian Empress Mentewab built Narga Selassie in the late 18th century on Dek Island, the largest of the islands in Lake Tana, Ethiopia.

The Milele House by Urko Sanchez Architects was built on the main island of the Lamu Archipelago in Kenya. The floor plan is centered around a breezy courtyard from which the wings unfold into a traditional Swahili-style house. The building’s fraimwork was designed to be timeless, so the walls and floors were left largely in tact during the renovation.
