Named “Designer of the Year” at the Maison&Objet show, Michael Anastassiades agreed to offer candid answers to our questionnaire about his inspirations. It was an ideal occasion to learn a little more about a designer with a flair for spectacular minimalism.

Inspired by classic pinball machines, Anastassiades’ General Illuminations is a group of new lights. The designs combine archetypical spheres with mirrored surfaces that reflect the light and create a sense of endless depth. The impossibility for one to see one’s reflection in the mirror is a play on the myth of Narcissus, who fell in love with his own image, while the sphere references those used by clairvoyants to read into the future.

This collection of fixtures uses the standard unit of the light tube as a measure. Through the alternation of 1m and 0.5m modules, it creates a rhythmic language of recording space.
