In 2020, record forest fires across western USA sparked fresh concern over the impact of climate change on wildfires and renewed efforts to better predict future hazards. Fire–climate models agree that fire-burn areas will continue to increase in western USA owing to climate change. However, the current and future role of fuel limitation at a regional scale is unclear.

Fuel availability, a poorly studied feedback on regional-scale wildfire trends, only moderately reduces projections of climate-driven trends in forest fire area. Proactive mitigation efforts to adapt to the inertia of wildfire in western USA are thus important. More research is therefore required to examine how these broad-scale relationships manifest themselves at higher spatial resolution, to help inform local fire management practices such as prescribed burning.
