[edit]From the root خ ر ف (ḵ-r-f), from which particularly خَرِيف (ḵarīf, “autumn; a year, one complete agricultural cycle”), meaning a lamb or colt that has lived long enough to pasture on the produce of this season or born in this season, or one year old.
