Etymology 1

[edit]

According to STEDT, from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *m-k(r)ew (dove, pigeon), whence also ချိုး (hkyui:, dove) and Chinese (OC *[k](r)u) (B-S). Said Sino-Tibetan root appears to be onomatopoeic; compare also Thai เขา (kǎo), Vietnamese cu, English coo.

Etymology 2

[edit]
This etymology is missing or incomplete. Please add to it, or discuss it at the Etymology scriptorium.
Particularly: “Not given etymology by STEDT (khui "take shelter, refuge"), and not mentioned by Luce 1981. Doesn't seem to resemble much in Sinitic; words like Old Chinese (OC *ɡaːw, “trench, moat; air-raid shelter”) do not match strongly, either phonetically or semantically.”

  1. to take refuge or shelter, seek protection
  2. to cling to

  4. to give or put in less than the right amount
