Phono-semantic compound (形聲 / 形声, OC *sŋra) : semantic + abbreviated phonetic (OC *sŋra, *sŋras).

Etymology 1

[edit]

Traditionally thought to be related to (OC *sŋra, “distant; sparse”), as compared to (OC *piː, *bis, “fine-tooth comb”) (Shiming; Wang, 1982).

However, Schuessler (2007) considers this to be folk etymology and instead proposes that this is related to Tibetan གཤོད (gshod, to comb), Proto-Kuki-Chin *hriat (to comb; to brush). STEDT provisionally reconstructs Proto-Tibeto-Burman *g-s-j(w)at (to comb; to brush) and also notes possible connection to Proto-Tibeto-Burman *m-si-t (comb; rake).

Pronunciation

[edit]

Note:
  • so1 - to comb (verb), classifier;
  • so1* - comb (noun).
Note:
  • so͘ - literary;
  • soe/se - vernacular.
