Etymology

[edit]

Probably an alteration of the earlier Ōsēe (q.v.)—the form used in the Vulgate—chosen for consistency with the Latin names of some other Biblical characters (such as Andreās, Matthiās, and Michaeās) and with its ultimate Biblical Hebrew etymon, הוֹשֵׁעַ (Hoshea'); an intermediate Ancient Greek etymon of the form *Ὡσηᾱς (*Hōsēās) does not occur.
