[edit]From Proto-Germanic *hweulō, plural of *hwehwlą, from Proto-Indo-European *kʷékʷléh₂, plural of *kʷekʷlóm, *kʷékʷlos, derived from the root *kʷel- (“going around”). Cognate with Old Frisian hwēl, Old Saxon hwiol, and Old Norse hvél. Extra-Germanic cognates include Ancient Greek κύκλος (kúklos).
