From misdivision (llo-eau) of plural lloeau, from Middle Welsh lloe, from Proto-Brythonic *llọɨɣ, from Proto-Celtic *lāɸigos (compare Cornish leugh, Breton leue, Old Irish lóeg), from Proto-Indo-European *leyg- (to jump) (compare English lark (to frolic), Lithuanian láigyti (to run around wildly)). Alternatively from Proto-Celtic *lāɸigos, from Proto-Indo-European *leh₂p- (cattle) (compare Albanian lopë).
