English

[edit]
A man using an oven of a pizzeria.

Etymology

[edit]

From Middle English oven, from Old English ofn, from Proto-West Germanic *ofn, from Proto-Germanic *uhnaz, *uhwnaz (compare Dutch oven, Low German Aven, West Frisian ûne, German Ofen, Danish ovn, Norwegian Bokmål ovn, Norwegian Nynorsk omn, Swedish ugn, Icelandic ofn, Finnish uuni, Gothic 𐌰𐌿𐌷𐌽𐍃 (auhns), probably from a Proto-Indo-European *aukʷ- (cooking pot), *Hukʷ-, *ukʷnos (compare Sanskrit उखा (ukhā), Albanian anë, Latin aulla, olla, Ancient Greek ἰπνός (ipnós)).

The modern pronunciation shows an occasional sound change in which o is changed to u (compare with the phonetic development of Coventry and shovel).
