From Middle High German snoede, ultimately from Proto-Germanic *snauþuz (bald, naked, poor), from Proto-Indo-European *ksnéw-tu-s, from the root *ksnew- (to scrape, sharpen). Cognates include Dutch snood, sneu and Old Norse snauðr.
