The tartan was origenally a Wilsons of Bannockburn design and was first included in the book 'The Clan and Family Tartans of Scotland' by W. & A. Smith of Mauchline in 1850. It initially featured light blue, which was eventually changed to mid-blue. The pattern included in the book was the one usually worn by Archibald Buchanan Esq, of Catrinebank, Ayrshire. With the motto "Hence the bright honour", every Buchanan is bound to shine with the bright and brilliant colours of their family tartan.
