The Southeast Region Mule Deer Advisory Committee, composed of 12 southeast Idaho sportsmen, have submitted two proposals for the Idaho Fish and Game Commission to consider during its January meeting. If the Commission gives the go-ahead, the proposals will then be included as part of the big game season-setting package to be presented to the public in February.

Hunters looking to apply for 2025 spring controlled hunts for black bear can apply from Jan. 15 to Feb. 15. Information on the spring 2025 controlled black bear hunt can be found in the 2024 Idaho Big Game Seasons and Rules booklet. As of Jan. 1, 2025, anyone hunting black bears in Idaho must show proof that they have passed a bear identification test to help them differentiate between grizzly bears and black bears.
The first class is a combination of hunter and bowhunter education that will be taught in Glenns Ferry, ID, from February 14 – March 1, 2025, at the Glenns Ferry High School.
The second class is a women-only class in Jerome, at the Fish and Game Magic Valley Regional Office, 324 South 417 East, Jerome, from February 20 – 22, 2025. The class is only for girls and women aged 9 and older. The class will be taught by women instructors.
As we enter the new year, the ice fishing season on Lake Cascade is off to a strong start. Winter arrived early this year, and we have received reports of people catching some nice perch, trout, and coho through the ice already. Ice depths are reportedly reaching up to 8 inches on the lake's southern and northern ends, but it is still a little thin in the mid-lake area.
