Winter Houseplant Watering Guide
In late fall and winter, the days are shorter and sunlight is less intense. The lack of sunlight slows down growth, and plants need less water when they aren't actively growing. How often you should water depends on where you live and the humidity and temperature of your home. Poke your finger at least an inch into the soil. If the soil feels dry, give your plant a big drink of water. If the soil is moist, wait a few days before checking again.
Houseplants by Light Requirements
Many common houseplants prefer bright, indirect light. This means they do well near a south, east, or west facing window, but they should be shielded from direct sun rays either by placing your plant a few feet back from a window, or by covering the window with a sheer curtain. However, some plants require direct sunlight, and some prefer more shade, so it's always best to research the needs of your individual plant when deciding where to place it in your home.
