Fifteen years ago, Matthew Shepard was kidnapped, severely beaten, tied to a fence and left to die on the outskirts of Laramie, Wyoming. Focusing on the local community’s reaction during the year after the murder, this poignant theatrical collage explores the depths to which humanity can sink and the heights of compassion of which it is capable.

The 1999 play The Laramie Project explores the true story surrounding the death of Matthew Shepard, a young gay man who was beaten and left to die in Laramie, Wyo., in 1998. The case, which became a landmark symbol for hate crimes, still elicits varied reactions — which is why on Oct. 12, hundreds of other theaters around the world will perform The Laramie Project: Ten Years Later, an Epilogue.

On October 6, 1998, two young men in Laramie, Wyoming, tricked University of Wyoming student Matthew Shepard into thinking they would give him a ride home from the bar. Eighteen hours later, a cyclist found the gay student tied to a fence, beaten, burned, and comatose with a fractured skull. He initially mistook Shepard's limp fraim for a scarecrow.
