The 1970 Maverick was advertised as an economy sports coupe weighing 2411 pounds and getting 22 miles per gallon. It had a 170 cubic inch straight engine and sold for $1, 995. The 1971 Maverick model year introduced a 302 cubic inch small block Ford V8 engine option, which some say delivered smoother power and better fuel economy than the 250 engine though it was more expensive. The 1971 Maverick also included a sporty grabber version with a two hundred 10 horse power three hundred two cubic inch V eight. The Maverick success was surprising and Ford increased prices which led to the car's demise in 19 seventy-seven. However, the Mavericks engine configuration was easy to tune. Making it faster and cheaper than Ford's flagship car, the Mustang.
