The circular so-called “Temple of Vesta” at Tivoli, of the early first century BCE, has been widely admired since the Renaissance. Its ruins sit on the acropolis of the Etruscan and Roman city of Tibur (now Tivoli), overlooking the falls of the Aniene in a picturesque narrow gully.

The temple of the Vestal Virgins was actually a temple of Vesta and the Vestal Virgins were the priestesses serving in the temple. It was situated in the Roman Forum, and it dated from around 550 BCE. It was burned down many times and it was rebuilt many times. The most famous time it was destroyed was in the great fire of Nero in 64 CE.
