The Hebrews wore leather and iron armor that was not standard, the weapons were all bronze and the shields were made of wicker, a kind of hardened straw. It was this irregular but well-armed army that wiped out about 100,000 Canaanites and 160,000 Amorites. In the days of the judges, Hebrew soldiers were just ordinary men summoned by tribal chiefs to form militias to protect their property, forming an army only when summoned by the Judge.
