Joseph Pulitzer (April 18, 1847, Mako, Hungary-October 29, 1911, Charleston, South Carolina). Hungarian-American newspaper publisher. Owner and Publisher, St. Louis Post-Dispatch, 1878-1911. Owner of a large chain of newspapers, including the New York World. Promoted a brand of populist reporting and muckraking known as "yellow journalism." U.S. Representative (D-NY), 1885-1886. Endowed Columbia University and the Pulitzer Prizes.
