Calligraphers write spring couplets during the Huangyan New Year Goods Week in Taizhou.
Huangyan district in Taizhou, Zhejiang province, buzzed with activity on Jan 17, as the Huangyan New Year Goods Week combined shopping, entertainment, and cultural experiences.
A unique local tradition in Huangyan known as "Xie Nian" or "Thanking the Year" involves offering fish, pork, tofu, and rice cakes. As Spring Festival approaches, residents came to the event to procure these essential ingredients.
By 10 am, stalls had already been set up for a diverse range of products from traditional snacks and local specialties to modern household items and electronics, attracting a large crowd.
In addition to abundant New Year's goods, traditional activities like writing spring couplets and pounding rice cakes captivated attendees. Resident Li Tao expressed a preference for handwritten couplets, citing their nostalgic value.
At an area dedicated to traditional customs, calligraphers showed their skills by writing their best wishes on red paper. Visitors appreciated the artistry and selected their favorites to bring home, creating a lively atmosphere filled with laughter and joy.
The Huangyan New Year Goods Week will run until Jan 23 to celebrate the upcoming Spring Festival.
