Welcome To Deadline Hot Spots THE FIRST TIME I VISITED NEW MEXICO, some 30 years ago, I learned how to ski on its breathtaking, snowcapped mountains. Then I was able to enjoy a few of its bubbling hot springs. Throw in a few national monuments, some of the best food I have ever had (and I consider myself a foodie), the art, the remarkable architecture, and… well, you get the picture. That’s why they call it the Land of Enchantment. As Hollywood production starts moving across the country, we at Deadline want to be there to spotlight each new Hot Spot, shedding light on its pool of talent, as well as its unique locations and resources. When the idea of Hot Spots was born, New Mexico was a smart and easy choice for our inaugural event. In the last three years, the state has received more than $100 million of investment from the Hollywood community. At the same time, both Netflix and NBCUniversal have laid down roots in Albuquerque, setting up shop with new production hubs, with plans to remain in ABQ for the foreseeable future. Now, that’s something to put a spotlight on. If you’re still asking yourself, “Why New Mexico?” that question will undoubtedly be answered at Hot Spots, so that you can think about taking your next project to the Land of Enchantment. Following day tours of Santa Fe and Albuquerque, showcasing the cities’ studios, filming locations and memorable sites, you’ll hear from city, state and regional film commissioners, the heads of local production facilities, and financial experts, as well as a number of A-list creatives currently working in New Mexico, who will offer their perspectives on what makes the state an invaluable production hub. There are 22 training programs statewide and we have one of the best workforce training incentive programs in the country, which pays a portion of the wages for new and advancing crew members. • The Film Incentive Tax Credit rebates a portion of production spending and we now have an extra five percent credit for rural locations. • And New Mexico has in place one of the most innovative programs in the United States with our Film Partners Program, where studios and production partners who agree to a 10-year stream of work are guaranteed rebates for the lease or purchase of stage space. In 2019, 94 productions spent more than $525 million in New Mexico. Both NBCUniversal and Netflix are now film partners and have established production centers in Albuquerque, while commercial and tribal partners are eager to develop more stage space to suit customer needs.
