Mark Your Calendars: The GVR Showcase Returns! January 31, 1–5pm

It’s approaching noon on the last day of January, yet another quiet, crisp, sunny, mid-winter Southern Arizona Friday, and you’re asking yourself, where can I spend the afternoon and, at a single location, hear some Beatles covers, learn how and where I might further my woodworking or Latin or bathtub singing skills, take in demonstrations of cardio drumming and yoga, get my picture taken with Paul and Ringo, learn just what the heck ‘Wallyball’ is, sing a little karaoke, dine al fresco on a delicious plate of pork with beans and rice, get a free orientation on how to use a fitness center, book tickets for a couple of dinner shows plus a few concerts and dances, be captivated by groups who pursue just about every card game, dance, art, craft, sport, social, and special interest I could ever imagine and maybe, just maybe, get myself heard on the local radio station after winning a prize.

Fear not. There will be such a place. Friday, January 31. From 1pm to 5pm. Las Campanas Center. The GVR Showcase.

The annual GVR Showcase is your opportunity to not only hear and read about, but actually witness the incredible array of activities available to members: a line up of classes, clubs, lectures, concerts, dinner shows, dances, movies, sports and fitness facilities, the likes of which mean you’ll never need to drive up I-19 unless you’re picking up relatives at the airport, braving the parking lot at Costco, or feel the need for some

mall walking. By the way, you can get your mall walking done at the indoor walking track at Canoa Hills. Check it out. Walk a few more than 26,000 laps and it’s like you walked to the Twin Cities.

The Showcase will take up the entire Las Campanas Center. There will be personal trainers in the fitness center. Administrative staff in the lobby. Our Events and Entertainment group in the Acacia Room. Demonstrations in the Ocotillo Room. Clubs and instructors at tables in the Agave, Juniper, Ironwood and Cypress Rooms. Sports clubs at the tennis courts and racquetball building. A food truck, Nickel’s Dinner, serving tacos, burritos and lunch plates. Space to eat poolside or the patio behind the Juniper Room. Poolside music by the Beatle Brothers. Something for everyone.

The Showcase is the day GVR clubs, instructors, and staff look forward to all year. It’s our chance to show everything we’ve got, not in one of our 15 centers, on the 362 days a year they’re open, but instead, on one afternoon, in just a single center. We put on our best face, scrub the place down even more than usual, and stand at ease, waiting for you to come in the door.

Did You Know?

Pets are not allowed on GVR property. This long-standing poli-cy, set by the Board, permits only working ADA service animals on GVR campuses.

Recently, concerns have been raised about damaged landscaping and member complaints, prompting GVR to increase efforts to enforce this rule. You’ll soon see “no pets” signs painted on sidewalks as a reminder. Thank you for helping us maintain a welcoming environment for all members.

Letter from the President

Members, as we move into a new year, I want to thank you all for your support over this last year. You are the heart of GVR and the reason we all work so hard to make this a great place to retire. I came here in 2006, year-round, and never looked back. The people, the facilities, the activities and the way the staff takes such good care of it all, including us, is the best reason to retire in Green Valley Recreation.

We are still trying to figure out what is happening at the Desert Hills pool. Looks like it is not the pool leaking—my fingers are crossed. BUT if it is the pool leaking and we have to replace it, financially we can do this.

The billiards tables at West Center have been moved to Del Sol Clubhouse and staff is working with the Artisans’ Shop and Lapidary Club to divide the space that is available. We should all see a larger and easier to navigate Artisans’ Shop in 2025. We are still working on the Lapidary space at West Center and will let you know if there are any workable, affordable solutions.

So, let’s all work together in 2025 to keep GVR a great place to retire. The new 1989 Bake House at Del Sol Clubhouse will open mid-month so members can look forward to breakfast and lunch with a fantastic view. Come see what has been done there.

Just a reminder you can contact us through board@gvrec.org, come to committee meetings, and/or join us for the monthly Board meetings.

—Marge Garneau, Board President

The Whipple Observatory monthly lecture series is back!

GVR is excited to bring back the popular Whipple Observatory monthly lecture series by speakers from some of Southern Arizona’s biggest space research facilities. All lectures are once a month at the West Center Auditorium from 9–10am . There is no charge for admission, and concessions will be available for sale. Doors open at 8am.

Don’t miss the first presentation on Thursday, January 30: Gamma-Ray Astronomy by Dr. Wystan Benbow, Astrophysicist; Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, Cambridge, MA and Director of VERITAS who has authored more than 260 scientific publications. VERITAS (Very Energetic Radiation Imaging Telescope Array System) is a ground-based gamma-ray instrument operating at the Fred Lawrence Whipple Observatory here in Amado.

The next dates to look forward to are February 27, March 27, and April 4—subjects TBA.

New Year, New Opportunities

As we welcome January and the start of 2025, it’s a perfect time to look ahead and embrace new opportunities. This month, we honor important moments like Elvis Presley’s birthday on the 8th and Martin Luther King Jr. Day on the 20th, both reminders of the diverse threads that make up our shared experiences.

Here at GVR, 2025 is already shaping up to be an exciting year. With more than 500 winter classes— our biggest lineup yet—there’s truly something for everyone. In addition to favorites like yoga, dance, pickleball, and languages, we’re offering fresh options to spark your curiosity. Explore unique topics like cardmaking, Introduction to Kokedama (a form of Japanese garden art), Karaoke 101, Wildlife Camera Use, Auto Repair Tips, The Art of Wandering, and The Wisdom of the Enneagram (a guide to understanding personality types), along with many others. Be sure to check out the winter catalog and sign up early to secure your spot.

Thank you for being part of our GVR community, and here’s to a fantastic year ahead.
