May 4: Dr. B.R. Ambedkar (1891-1956) Untouchable lawyer and author of India's constitution, establishes The Buddhist Society of India (Bharatiya Bauddha Mahasabha). Addressing thousands of Untouchables who had assembled for the occasion, he declared that henceforth he would devote himself to the propagation of Buddhism in India. He also announced that he was writing a book, ‘The Buddha and His Dhamma', explaining the tenets of Buddhism in simple language for the benefit of the common man.
