Erythronium grandiflorum is a North American species of plants in the lily family. It is known by several common names, including yellow avalanche lily, glacier lily, and dogtooth fawn lily. Yellow fawn-lily is also commonly called dogtooth-violet, but its not a violet at all. Its one of the most common spring wildflowers growing in numerous habitats including shrublands, open pine forests, western redcedar and up into the subalpine forests and parklands. The range includes southern B.C. south through the Olympics, Cascades and Rockies to Oregon, Montana, and Colorado. This photo taken in the Clearwater Mountains near Elk River, Idaho.

My return to Glacier National Park was in search of the beautiful Glacier Lilies. Lilies that I had seen carpeting the green meadows that were uncovered after the snow melted. During my last trip here, those glacier lilies were the highlight of my hike over the famous Highline Trail in the park. They had transported me to Switzerland. Sadly, I encountered really bad luck this time. I could not only not find a sizeable group of lilies, but also not find any photogenic bundle. Nevertheless…
