Kiyomizudera is one of the most famous temples in Japan. It was built in 780 on the site of the Otowa Waterfall in the hills east of Kyoto. Its name comes from the fall's pure waters, (Kiyomizudera, literally ""Pure Water Temple""). The Kiyomizu-dera temple is the end point to the labyrinth of shops and stalls in the Gion District . It is situated high up on the city and therefore provides good views of Kyoto.
