Hel in old Norse means hidden, she is a goddess in Norse mythology who rules over Helheim, the underworld where the dead dwell. She is the keeper and protector of the souls that are between reincarnations. Only old souls go to her underworld place, often depicted as womb like cave inside the ground. It is believed that this place can be entered through a cave or well. That’s why up to this day, people still throw coins in a well for luck!
