Ceylon – a world travel destination even in 1917! A poster for ‘Colourful Ceylon’ in 1917, a travelogue on Ceylon by Elias Burton Holmes (1870–1958) an American traveler, photographer and filmmaker, who coined the term "travelogue". Travel stories, slide shows, and motion pictures were all in existence before Holmes began his career, as was the profession of travel lecturer; but Holmes was the first person to put all of these elements together into documentary travel lectures.
Group of Tamil Coolie Women - Lankapura
GROUP OF ESTATE COOLIES | The term coolie was used during the 19th-early 20th centuries for unskilled workers brought from India as cheap labor by the British. Under the "kangany system" each tea estate had a head kangany and sub kanganies. Often the group under the sub kangany consisted for family members and close relatives. Tea estates employed the women and children.
