This austere work by Jasper Johns doesn’t seem to invite much of a close read. But its cool surface belies a depth of feeling, which shows us all the power of artistic restraint.

He was best known for his very large canvases, many from 6 to 9 feet high, painted from the 1940s onwards. These oftenconsistof a single strong colour, modified only by changes of direction in the brushstrokes, or bisection by one or more horizontal or vertical streaks.
