Architects: Stanley Heaps and Thomas Bilbow. Central, District and Hammersmith & City lines. The station was opened in 1902 by the Whitechapel & Bow Railway. The District Line started here in 1905, the Metropolitan (later renamed Hammersmith & City Line) in 1936 and the Central Line in 1946. Greater usage required a bigger station, and it was re-built by Heaps and his assistant, Bilbow.
