Jacques Lyakov on Instagram: "Three tomato trellis options I always have in my garden! While I have my favorites I also love trying new things every year. This year for example I am doing the string trellis but as two leaders instead of a single leader. The net trellis has always been in my favorites but I don’t like the visual barrier it ads to the garden. And lastly the Florida weave has always been my favorite for unruly tomato containment!" The single leader string tomato trellis is definitely the cheapest when it comes to materials, give that you have something to attach to. I like to do this for my earliest tomatoes due to the high air flow and low disease pressure. The single leader tends to produce earlier as well as the plant doesn’t have to support all the suckers! Full pros and cons down below 👇

Advantages:
Cheap, pennies in string/twine
Higher Airflow = Less Disease which is great for early season
No Suckers = Earlier + Larger Tomatoes
Denser planting for more variety, since they are pruned you can plant tighter

Disadvantages:
Lower Overall Harvest w/o Suckers
High Maintenance Due To Pruning
If Not Maintained It Becomes Floppy FAST

We help you grow. on Instagram: "One of our favorite ways to trellis big, vining tomatoes is with string and a few tomato clips - that’s it! When you transplant your tomato, you can either bury the string underneath your tomato to secure it in the ground, or tie the string to a stake and press into the soil.

Then, tie the other end of the string to a simple structure above the tomato plant made of 2x4 lumber or metal conduit. Both are relatively inexpensive at most hardware stores. Our setup cost $50 to make and grows about 12 huge vining tomatoes.

Every 1’ (0.3m) or so, snap a tomato clip (which you can find at most nurseries) to the string and around your tomato’s main stem. As the tomato grows, you may want to also prune off any side shoots that grow out, but this is optional.
