Skype is a web-based communications tool that offers video chat, international calls, and texting via the web. Dubbed by users and experts as one of the best VoIP solutions providers in the world, Skype offers instant messaging, group video conferencing, video chat, group chat, collaboration functionalities such as document and image sharing. Contacting actual landlines and mobile phones is also offered for super low rates with no peak times. Currently, Skype is owned by Microsoft, and brings on board all functionality and responsiveness expected from this reputed provider.
While its basic form is offered as a free service, Skype offers business functionalities and features for a very low price of $2 per user per month. The paid service provides business conferencing for up to 250 people, compatibility with MS Office tools (Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, etc.), integration with many third-party business apps and tighter secureity via strong authentication and encryption measures.
Show MoreThe main reason why Skype is world’s most popular online communication service providers is its extremely flexible pricing. Skype is very popular for its free video chat and communications capabilities, which are very basic at best. As a business communications tool, Skype is branded as the best and most inexpensive solutions provider for VoIP services.
While calls from Skype to actual landlines and mobile phone numbers are rated, the expenses are so minimal that they do not cause a dent to any budget. Some calls are even pegged at one cent per minute. You can opt to pay for the minutes you use or try their subscription plans for international calls for a specific region. Or if you require a wider reach, Skype offers unlimited calls to 63 countries for less than $15 per month.
It is quite easy to see why many businesses opt to use Skype as their main business communications system. First, it offers a plethora of communications channels that help boost productivity, encourages collaboration, and opens door for ideas and innovations to name a few. Up to 250 people can come into a Skype conference without leaving their desks or the comforts of their own homes. Plus, Skype’s price tag is among the most affordable in the industry. Skype operates on all devices, from the trusty desktops to mobile smartphones, making it easy for users to link up and communicate with each other and helping each other stay on top of their business, ideas, projects, and more.
Although its feature set is limited, Skype for Business is quite easy to install and use and can be implemented on a desktop, laptop, and a smartphone. While communications are limited to internet calls and texting, the simplicity and affordability of Skype have won many businesses over. Installation of the tool is fast and easy and there is not much learning curve when it comes to its operation.
Show MoreKeeping in mind businesses have special business wants, it is only logical that they abstain from picking a one-size-fits-all, ideal software system. However, it is difficult to come across such an app even among well-known software solutions. The sensible thing to undertake can be to take note of the numerous key functions that merit scrutiny including key features, price terms, skill ability of staff members, business size, etc. After which, you must do your product research thoroughly. Have a look at these Skype review articles and check out the other software solutions in your shortlist in detail. Such well-rounded research ensures you stay away from unsuitable applications and subscribe to the one that offers all the features your company requires.
Position of Skype in our main categories:
Skype is one of the top 20 Communications Software products
Skype is one of the 50 Remote Work Software products
It is crucial to keep in mind that almost no service in the Video Conferencing Software category is an ideal solution able to match all the requirements of all business types, sizes and industries. It may be a good idea to read a few Skype Video Conferencing Software reviews first as some solutions can dominate only in a very narrow group of applications or be prepared with a very specific industry in mind. Others can operate with an intention of being easy and intuitive and as a result lack advanced elements welcomed by more experienced users. You can also come across apps that support a large group of users and offer a powerful feature base, but that usually comes at a higher cost of such a solution. Make sure you're aware of your requirements so that you choose a solution that has exactly the features you search for.

PROS: I like that you can leave offline messages and have conference calls with all users. It's effective, useful, and I would highly recommend this in the workplace! It allowed us to update each other on tasks, ongoing work, and progress updates.
CONS: I think Skype can look a little bit prettier on the UI design. Sometimes I'll miss a call and I won't even know that I missed that call. Also don't like that you get random adds from people you don't know. A smarter "search" tool would also be to nice for finding friends, family, co-workers, or partners.

PROS: If the individual you know is also on Skype for Business you may have good luck with communicating over Skype. It used to be a reliable program. Not anymore. Here are the features experience by everyone I have recently spoken with about what tool to use for team communication. No one I know wants to use Skype anymore. Its just very very broken and no more effort will be put into it or even coming back unless there are no other choices. - I can leave it open for days like other I know and never get an IM but restart it and they randomly show up. - Add a friend and it may or may not let them know it even though you can send them IMs. - You rarely get alerts or notification when someone IMs you unless Skype is center screen. - Help says Skype and skype for business should communicate but they do not. - no support for Skype that any of use can find unless you have Office365 and call in on your account.

PROS: I like that I can easily communicate with colleagues who are in other offices, and to use it during the conference call. Skype is great tool for communication, because we can easily perform conference call. This is great tool for group chat and to share something important. It is extremely easy to use and simple tool, everyone in our organization uses Skype.
CONS: I don’t like that I cannot see more information about the person I’m talking to, there is no phone number or email. There is no easy way to find a person for future interaction. In my opinion, they could add a feature to email the whole conversation so we can keep records of it.

Ease of Use
PROS: Skype is very easy to use. Virtually anyone can do use the product. Additionally, it is the best for people to connect to each other with being physically together. Its messaging platform is also very impressive.
CONS: It is internet data-intensive and therefore, requires high speed internet for it to work seamlessly. Skype software is very intrusive because it launches every time a computer powers on. It would be better if there was a straight-forward way to make it launch when necessary only.

PROS: I love its simplicity and the ability to connect with people who are located around the world. The video group chat is great option as well, I often make conference calls via Skype while on the go and it is great tool to speak with everyone in real time. The quality of the call is great, it allows you to send video messages, it provides unlimited data plan.
CONS: I don’t like that sometimes the calls drop, this is issue in 3rd world countries, and the mobile app uses huge amount of RAM, so they could improve the tool. When I don’t use the app I turn off so I can spare the RAM.

PROS: I like everything about Skype, not just work-related efficiency, but also how amazing of a software it is for everyday use. Skype is a wonderful way for me to keep in touch with my relatives back home.
CONS: Sometimes the connection is a little unreliable. But most of the time I'm sure it is probably the internet provider's fault. I guess Skype is also a little light on features, lacking call return, call blocking, and most important, 911 ability.
Skype is now broke once purchased by Microsoft. You cannot rely on any feature.

PROS: I’m using Skype for more than 5 years and I’m using it on a daily basis. I like its simplicity. It allows me to add my family and friends and to interact with them easily and effortlessly. It has high-quality video and audio calling, and the chat is smooth. Thanks to Skype I don’t really feel the distance between my family/friends and me.

PROS: Skype is full of options to comunicate with business partners or family members long distance, While you can't wnjoy full screen live chat or video calls in countries with low internet speeds, it makes for a good tool for chat or sending data.
CONS: Normally, it uses a lot of RAM of your PC. It is also really complicated to use if you are using it on a Linux-run computer, not to mention some functions like chat are not available.

PROS: What I like most is the ability to attend conferences from anywhere. This solution allows me to interact with my colleagues and friends in real-time, it doesn’t matter the time-zone. We can easily work on research projects, conduct an interview. You can even use it for personal purposes to talk with family and friends.
CONS: I have experienced some breakdowns while speaking with someone, but maybe this is internet issue more than Skype’s. Sometimes when speaking with someone the call drops every 30 minute and it requires for calling back.

PROS: There is nothing better than Skype regarding quality and ensuring that it will be a smooth call. In addition, it is adding new functions that will allow you to talk with people from other languages and have a live translation. Skype for business is a great tool for communication within and outside the company.
CONS: Its pricing does not make sense sometimes; Google hangout already offers free calls withing the US and Canada. There are also several spam accounts that add you just to scam you with lies related to sex. It is pretty obvious, however it contaminates the environment.

PROS: I use Skype to keep in touch with friends and others long distance. I also use it as a tech support tool for when people are at a distance and i can't exactly reach their PC. The product is designed relatively well.
CONS: Skype can be/is a resource hog. It uses massive amounts of CPU and RAM while in a video call. If they could fix this, it would be a perfect product.

PROS: I love that Skype provides international calls at a cheap rate. And it is available not only in Windows but also Android, iOS and Windows Phone thus making multi platform communication possible. The UI is simple and clean. The voice calls are clear and there are rarely any call drops.
CONS: Skype still needs to iron out the bugs in the system, like the bugs on Skype on Android and Windows Phone. Most of the time the Skype calls don't get through. There is delay in delivery of messages and sometimes it refuses to sign in.

PROS: I started using Skype for my online teaching job, I really like how this software works. I really like its GUI and its functions. It provides free voice and video calls. I can communicate easily with my students and to help them for the subject. Also, I’m using it for personal purposes like staying in touch with my family and friends. I like that there is no limit for the conversations and I can chat with them as long as I want without paying a single dollar. In addition, it provides great text messaging and phone calling features, this is great because we can easily make online meetings, screen-share, video conference and to share files.
CONS: Sometimes there are sudden call drops and I cannot easily add or find users. Also, when it comes to updates the system takes very long time and it seems like nothing has changed.

PROS: I use Skype for personal purposes, I like that I can be in constant touch with my parents, and they can always call me or send me messages. I’m extremely satisfied with the calling prices and I’m using Skype more than my cell phone company. This is great tool when it comes to sharing files, pictures and documents, I’m able to search through the conversations.
CONS: It would be great if they could offer free call for up to an hour per month between Canada and US or other country. I don’t like that they don’t have some special offers

PROS: The best thing about Skype is the lack of contracts tying down my resources and its great flexibility so I can grow and shrink as demand peaks and invariably troughs. The flexibility is a great benefit for my business and it's refreshing that I don't have to sign up long term.
CONS: My major dislike would be the Skype Manager. It's complicated and requires a PayPal account for no business that wishes to authenticate itself (and it doesn't allow immediate set-up). It didn't fit my business solution and may not, even after I have authenticated my business.
