The Morgan Library & Museum on Instagram: "A previously unknown Chopin waltz has been uncovered in our collection by our Associate Curator of Music Manuscripts Robinson McClellan. This is the first work in the hand of composer Frédéric Chopin to be discovered since the 1930s. While cataloguing manuscripts, McClellan came across one that seemed to be by Chopin--but strangely, it didn't match any of the waltzes he knew. After extensive research with external experts and conservators, it became clear that this was indeed an unknown Chopin work--a major discovery in classical music. The Morgan’s manuscript has 24 notated measures that the pianist repeats once. The beginning is remarkable: several moody, dissonant measures culminate in a loud outburst, before a melancholy melody begins. Claude Debussy's piece Reflets dans l'eau ("Reflections in the Water") is the first of three pieces for the piano from his first volume of Images, which are frequently performed separately. It was written in 1905. As with much of Debussy's work, it is referred to as Impressionistic, meaning that it expresses emotions and senses by making use of non-functional harmony and ambiguous key signatures, its tonality being mainly non-diatonic and usually having a sense of modality.
