LABORATORY: AT LEAST 12 LABS/SEMESTER (2 hours/lab.)

DESCRIPTION: A study of the impact of the atmosphere on living organisms including basic elements of weather and climate are discussed with emphasis on the practical application of meteorology to everyday problems within the biosphere.

TOPICS:

Basics of weather analysis and interpretation: Weather and climate variables, Weather instruments and observations, Psychometrics of the atmosphere, Air/ocean interactions, Satellite meteorology, Radar meteorology.

Weather and climate impact on: Insects, diseases, other pests, man, animals, plants.

Utility of weather and climatological data: Analysis of climate data, Interpretation of climate statistics.

Modification of the aerial environment: Windbreaks, Shelter belts, Freeze protection, Orchard climates.

Modeling the responses to the weather and climate within the biosphere: Climates in buildings--shelters, greenhouses, homes.

Climatic fluctuations: Climatic variability, climatic change, urbanization.

LABORATORY PROJECT(S): Formal laboratories with reports will compliment the lecture material in the following areas: Plotting and interpreting weather data, Utilizing computers in meteorology, Operational weather forecasting, Psychometrics of the atmosphere, Utilizing weather and climate data in decision-making, Applications of statistical climatology. Also...the lab will also be used to certify students as Storm Spotters
