1991 KENTUCKY GROWING SEASON SUMMARY Wed Nov 13 10:00:00 EDT 1991 NOVEMBER 4-10, 1991 The temperatures during the week were 10 to 15 degrees cooler than normal across the state. The average high temperatures were between 35 to 47 degrees and the average lows were in the 15 to 25 degrees range. Precipitation was sparse across the state. Northern Kentucky received most of the rainfall with an average amount of 0.10 inches. OCTOBER 28 - NOVEMBER 3, 1991 High temperatures for the week averaged near 70 degrees which was a few degrees above normal. Low temperatures for the week averaged in the 40s and were around 5 degrees above normal. Precipitation for the week ranged from around an inch in the west to around 0.50 inches in central sections. East Kentucky saw less than .20 of an inch of rain and thus had little help from the weather in fighting the forest fires. OCTOBER 21-27, 1991 The average temperature during the week over most of Kentucky was 65. The average highs were 8x-9x above the season average. The lows were about 11x above the season mean. The average rainfall was 1.10 inches over the state during the week. Most of the rain fell in western parts of the state. OCTOBER 14-20, 1991 Highest temperatures reached into the lower 80s with lows falling into the upper 20s and low 30s. For the week, temperatures averaged in the lower 50s which is a few degrees below normal for mid-October. Most of the state reported rain during the first of the week with amounts generally 0.25 to 0.50 inches. OCTOBER 7-13, 1991 Average high temperatures for the week ranged from the mid 60s across the northeast to lower 70s across the western part of Kentucky. This was 2x-6x below normal. Average low temperatures were mostly 35x to 40x, which was 5x-10x below normal. Rainfall for the week was very light with most locations reporting less than 0.10 inches. This was about 0.50 inches below normal. SEPTEMBER 30 - OCTOBER 6, 1991 Kentucky experienced a cool week last week. High temperatures averaged in the low 70s, around 6x below normal. Average low temperatures for the week were in the middle 40s, 4x below normal. Precipitation was quite variable last week with rainfall totals from around 0.40 of an inch over the western half of the state to about 1.00 inch over the east. SEPTEMBER 23-29, 1991 The average temperature during the week was 57x for Kentucky daily high temperatures were about 6x below the season mean. The daily low temperatures were about 5x below the normal. Precipitation was about 2.00 inches above normal. Dix Dam and Grayson had averages of above 1.00 inch that week. The average amount of rain was 0.60 inches across Kentucky. Central Kentucky received the most rain. SEPTEMBER 16-22, 1991 The week began with near record high temperatures in the low and mid 90s and ended with near record low temperatures in the upper 30s and lower 40s. The cold weather came on the heels of a cold front which moved across the region on Wednesday (9/18). Temperatures for the week averaged in the mid 60s which is 2x- 3x below normal for mid-September. All stations reported rain during the week. Amounts varied greatly, but generally averaged from 0.25 to 0.50 inches. SEPTEMBER 9-15, 1991 Unseasonably warm temperatures and spotty precipitation were the rule across Kentucky during the past week. Highest temperatures rose into the upper 90s with averages for the week ranging from the upper 80s to lower 90s, between 5x - 10x above normal. Precipitation was spotty, generally occurring in the form of scattered afternoon thunderstorms. Rainfall totals ranged from only a trace to 1.50 inches. The majority of locations received less than 0.50 inches, between 0.25 and 0.45 inches below normal. SEPTEMBER 2-8, 1991 The warm and humid weather continued into the first week of September. Highest afternoon temperatures reached into the upper 80s and lower 90s. For the week, temperatures averaged in the mid and upper 70s, which is about a degree above normal. Rainfall was heaviest along the Ohio River from Paducah to Louisville with amounts generally around 2.00 inches. Eastern Kentucky received the least rainfall with amounts generally up to 0.50 inches. AUGUST 26 - SEPTEMBER 1, 1991 The average temperatures were about 3 degrees above normal and the average lows were about 6 degrees above normal. The mean precipitation was 1.00 in. with the central and Bluegrass Regions receiving the most rain. AUGUST 19-25, 1991 The week began with scattered showers and cold temperatures, but by week's end, hot and humid weather had returned to the Ohio Valley. High temperatures were in the low to mid 90s with lows in the mid 50s. Average temperatures were in the low to mid 70s, which is near normal for late August. Rainfall averaged from around 0.25 to 0.75 inches. AUGUST 12-18 1991 Near normal temperatures and rainfall occurred over Kentucky during the past week. Daytime highs averaged in the mid 80s and lows in the lower 60s. Rainfall varied greatly with a few stations reporting 1.00 - 2.00 inch amounts, but most areas received about 0.50 of an inch. AUGUST 5-11 1991 Above normal temperatures occurred again over Kentucky during the past week, while rainfall was near normal. Daytime highs averaged in the upper 80s and lows in the mid 60s. These temperatures were about 2 degrees above normal. Rainfall was near normal balanced by above normal rainfall in the east and below normal amounts in the west. Rain averaged about 0.50 of an inch. In the west, 0.50 of an inch below normal, while 1.50 inch amounts in the east were 0.50 of an inch above the mean. JULY 29 - AUGUST 4 1991 High temperatures averaged in the lower 90s which was 2-5 degrees above normal. Low temperatures for the week averaged in the mid 50s, which was 2-4 degrees below normal. High temperature for the week was 101 at Princeton on August 3rd and the lowest was 51 at Cumberland Gap on August 2nd. Rainfall for the week averaged about 0.25 of an inch across far Western Kentucky with little or no rain elsewhere across the State except for very isolated heavy amounts. Most of the rain occurred on August 3rd and 4th. JULY 22-28 1991 Temperatures averaged 3-5 degrees above normal across Kentucky for the week. Maximum temperatures averaged around 90 while minimum temperatures were around 70. Precipitation was less than 0.25 inches across most of Kentucky except for isolated heavier amounts in brief, widely scattered thunderstorms. JULY 15-21 1991 Hot and dry weather occurred over the past week. Daytime highs averaged around 90 with lows in the upper 60s. Highs and lows were about 2x above the mean. Rain was mostly absent across the state. Deficits averaged a little over 1.00 in. JULY 8-14 1991 Afternoon highs reached into the upper 80s and lower 90s, overnight lows fell into the 60s and lower 70s. For the week temperatures averaged in the upper 70s and lower 80s, which is 2x-3x above normal for mid July. Most reporting stations recorded between 1.00-3.00 inches of rain. Dix Dam received the most rain with over 4.50 inches of rain reported. JULY 1-7 1991 The week was well above normal. High temperatures early in the week and late in the week were well into the mid and upper 90s. During the middle of the week, highs reached from the mid 80s to 90. Temperatures averaged in the lower 80s, which is around 5-7 degrees above normal for early July. Rain amounts varied from no rain in southeast Kentucky to over 2.00 inches over western Kentucky. JUNE 24-30 1991 High temperatures in Kentucky ranged from 85 to 90 degrees or just above normal. Low temperatures averaged from 65 to 70 degrees or 3-5 degrees above normal. Mean daily temperatures were near 77 degrees statewide. Rainfall was widely scattered this past week. Most locations received little or no rain and thus yielded weekly deficits near 1.00 inch. Isolated spots in southern Kentucky, however, received rainfall amounts of 1.00 to 3.00 inches. JUNE 17-23 1991 Very warm conditions with summer showers. Daytime highs averaged in the upper 80s, lows upper 60s, both 3 degrees above normal. Rain totals were highly variable, mostly 1.00-2.00 inches. JUNE 10-16 1991 Very warm and humid weather continued over Kentucky. Temperatures averaged from 5-10 degrees above normal with highs reaching into the lower 90s and the lows generally in the 70s. Widely scattered showers occurred during the week with amounts around 0.50 of an inch. However, most locations received little or no rain. JUNE 3-9 1991 High temperatures for the week averaged 80-85 which was near normal. Low temperatures for the week averaged from the mid 50s across Eastern Kentucky to the lower 60s across Western Kentucky which was near normal. The highest temperature was 94 at Louisville with the lowest 44 at Grayson. Rainfall occurred early in the week averaging less than 0.25 in. except Eastern Kentucky where 0.50 to 1.00 in. amounts were common. This was 0.50 to 0.75 in. below normal across most of the State. MAY 27-JUNE 2 1991 Very warm and humid weather continued over Kentucky for the past week. Temperatures averaged 7-10 above normal with highs in the upper 80s and lower 90s and lows in the mid 60s and low 70s for most of the week. Precipitation amounts varied widely over the state. In the west, amounts averaged less than 0.25 of an inch. In the east, thunderstorms were more numerous with many amounts between 1.00-3.00 inches. MAY 20-26 1991 The average high temperature was around 83 degrees, which was about 3.4 above normal. The average lows were around 65, which is 11.2 above the seasonal mean temperature. Precipitation was on the average 0.90 of inch across the state, 0.18 of an inch below the seasonal mean. MAY 13-19 1991 It was very warm with afternoon highs reaching into the 90's during the middle part of the week. Temperatures averaged in the mid 70s which is from 5x - 10x above normal for mid-May. Scattered thunderstorms produced varied amounts of rain during the week. The highest rainfall amounts were generally between 0.50 to 1.00 inch. MAY 6-12 1991 Average high temperatures for the week were in the mid to upper 70s, about 2 degrees above normal. Average low temperatures for the week were mostly in the mid 50s, which was about 3 to 5 degrees above normal. The highest temperature for the week was 88 degrees at Buckhorn lake on the 11th and the lowest was 35 degrees at Grayson on the 7th. Rainfall occurred across Kentucky nearly everyday of the week resulting in rainfall totals mostly in the 1.00-2.00 inch range. APRIL 29-MAY 5 1991 Temperatures across the state averaged around 65 degrees. This is about .50 to 1 degree above normal. High afternoon temperatures climbed into the mid 80s with lows overnight falling into the mid 30s. All Kentucky received rain during the week. The heaviest rain fell over southern Kentucky where between 1.00 to 2.00 in. were reported. APRIL 22-28 1991 Temperatures averaged around 60 degrees across the state. This is about 1-2 degrees below the season normal. The average highs were around 70 degrees and the lows were between 45 degrees and 49 degrees. The largest amount of precipitation was 0.95 of an inch. in Bristol, Kentucky. Precipitation was between 0.85 to 0.90 of an inch below normal for the week. APRIL 15-21 1991 Temperatures much above normal and ended up with temperatures well below normal. High temperatures early in the week climbed into the 80s, but the week's end afternoon highs reached only into the lower 50s. For the week, temperatures averaged in the lower 60s, which is a degree or two above normal for mid-April. Rainfall totals averaged between 1.00 and 2.00 inches over southern and eastern Kentucky and between 0.50 and 1.00 inches over far western and northern Kentucky. APRIL 8-14 1991 Warm and wet conditions prevailed over kentucky during the past week. Daytime high temperatures averaged in the lower 70s, about 5 degrees warmer than normal. Lows averaged in the lower 50s, some 5-10 degrees above the mean. Rain totals averaged around 2.00 inches in the west and about 1.00 inch in the east. These totals were about 1.00 inch over the mean in the west and near normal in the east. APRIL 1-7 1991 The week started off cool with steadily moderating temperatures during the rest of the week. Showers were noted during the later half of the week; however, no unusually heavy rain fell. Average high temperatures were in the upper 60s and lower 70s, while average low temperatures were mainly in the 40s. Precipitation averaged about 0.33 to 0.50 of an inch. and was considered about 0.50 inch below normal. MARCH 25-31 1991 The averaged temperature during the week was around 50 degrees, that was about 3-6 degrees above the season mean. The mean highs were around 65 degrees and the mean lows were around 42 degrees. The highs were about 5 degrees above normal and the lows were about 3 degrees above normal. The average precipitation was 0.98 of an inch across the state.
