Welcome To FAA COE CST

Congress authorized Air Transportation Centers of Excellence under the Federal Aviation Administration Research, Engineering and Development Authorization Act of 1990. This legislation enables the FAA to work with universities and their industry partners to conduct research in environment and aviation safety, and other activities to assure a safe and efficient air transportation system.  With the establishment of the COE CST in offices of FAA AST, research will extend to cutting-edge technologies and infrastructure for private human spaceflight and orbital debris mitigation.      Research will cover five areas including:

On March 3, 2015, the NASA Technology Portfolio System, (TechPort-beta) was released to the public.  TechPort is NASA’s comprehensive resource for locating information about NASA-funded technology development activities. NASA employees have been using the system for more than 2 years, and in that time have conducted more than 43,000 searches and generated more than 9,000 reports. 

TechPort will enable the public to explore NASA’s technology portfolio and learn about technology Programs and Projects, as NASA works to mature technologies for aeronautics, space exploration, and scientific discovery missions.  NASA is offering the public the opportunity to give this beta system a trial run and then provide feedback. After six months, NASA will collect ideas on how TechPort can better serve the external and internal users’ needs. Users’ input will enhance the system design and type of information provided in future versions.

By making technology development information easy to find, accessible, and usable, NASA will fuel entrepreneurship, innovation, and scientific discovery.  Industry and academia will have insight into the technology portfolio, and will be able to use this information to identify possible areas of technology development collaboration, forecast when technologies may be released for public use and commercialization, and identify areas of aeronautics and aerospace technology development need.
