In 2014, there were more than 23 million veterans in the United States. One in 14 veterans experienced a substance use disorder. In 2013, 62,000 veterans were admitted for treatment. The misuse and abuse of alcohol was the most prevalent substance use issue for veterans compared to non-veteran populations. For veterans seeking substance use treatment, 1 in 4 experienced homeless.

A combined 63.8 million adults 18 and older in the United States had either a substance use disorder or a mental illness in the past year. One in 12 adults had a substance use disorder and 1 in 5 adults had a mental illness in the past year. About 12% of these adults (7.9 million) experienced both a substance use disorder and a mental health issue. This is known as having a co-occurring behavioral health disorder.

One in five pregnant women report drinking alcohol during early pregnancy. Drinking alcohol during pregnancy may put your baby at risk for Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD). Effects of FASD on a baby can include physical impairments, learning disabilities and behavioral symptoms and FASD is 100% preventable. If you are pregnant or could be pregnant, don’t drink.

Underage drinkers tend to drink less often than adults, but when they do drink, their drinking is heavier. Underage drinkers on average consume 5 drinks per occasion, 5 times a month. When asked about the last time they drank, 23% of underage drinkers said they had 1 drink, 24.3% had 3 or 4 drinks, and 24% had 5 to 8 drinks. Parents have the power to prevent underage drinking and should talk to their children early and often about the dangers of alcohol.

In the United States, more than 20% of youth begin drinking before age 13. Among 12- to 14-year-olds, 92% consume alcohol in the form of binge drinking. For high school seniors, more than 90% say that access to alcohol is easy. Parents should talk to their children early and often about the dangers of alcohol. They have the power to prevent underage drinking.
