Governor's and Mayor's Challenges

Through its Governor's and Mayor's Challenges, SAMHSA and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs support the implementation of a public health approach for the prevention of suicide among service members, veterans, and their families. These efforts help states and communities develop the capacity to implement interagency military/civilian action plans grounded in evidence-based suicide prevention practices.

Congratulations to the 2020 Governor’s Challenge States!

The United States Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has partnered with the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) to continue the Governor’s Challenges to Prevent Suicide Among SMVF. Congratulations to the 20 states that just completed the 2020 Governor’s Challenge - Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Washington, West Virginia, and Wisconsin. With the support of their governor, each state formed an interagency military and civilian team to develop a strategic action plan to advance the National Strategy for Preventing Veteran Suicide (PDF | 2.9 MB). These 20 states have joined with the 7 inaugural states of 2019 in their commitment to implement best practices for preventing suicide among SMVF.
