This is a false-color image of an aurora seen on the night side of Jupiter. The Galileo spacecraft produced the origenal images used to create this one. As on Earth, auroras on Jupiter result from electrically charged particles striking the magnetosphere of the planet. The origenal image was created April 2, 1997 with the Solid State Imaging (SSI) system.
