NOAA 27th Annual Climate Diagnostics and Prediction Workshop

Scientific and Logistical Information

NOAA’s 27th Climate Diagnostics and Prediction Workshop will be held on October 21-25, 2002 at the George Mason University, Fairfax, Virginia. The workshop is co-hosted by the Climate Prediction Center of the National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP)/NOAA, Washington, D.C., and the Center for Ocean-Land-Atmosphere Studies (COLA), Calverton, MD. The American Meteorological Society is a cooperating sponsor. The workshop will provide an opportunity for participants to exchange information, ideas, and opinions on a variety of topics, including:

1.) Review and assessment of recent climate anomalies: their impacts and the skill of their predictions
2.) Defining, diagnosing and predicting El Nino and its impacts
3.) Diagnosing and predicting global and regional monsoon characteristics and associated teleconnections on intra-seasonal (MJO), inter-annual (ENSO) and inter-decadal (PDO, others?) time scales
4.) Diagnosing and predicting AO, NAO, PDO, PNA and the links between climate variability associated with these modes and extreme weather events
5.) Experimental long-lead prediction on the monthly, seasonal, inter-annual and inter-decadal time scales (skill, methodology, etc.)

Physical analysis and interpretation are particularly encouraged, regardless of whether the approach of the study is observational, modeling, or theoretical.

Please send your abstracts to: Ncep.CDWorkshop@noaa.gov

Include: Title, Author(s), Affiliation(s), Abstract, email address, phone and fax numbers, and preference for poster or oral presentation. Note: Poster presentations will outnumber oral ones, since time constraints and a large number of papers necessarily limit the number of oral talks which can be accomodated.

Deadline for submissions is August 2nd.
