Coast of Taltal

View of the coast of Taltal, looking north. Taltal is a town located approximately 1000 km north of Santiago and about 300 km south of Antofagasta, in the II Region of Chile. The economy of Taltal is mainly based on the mining industry and fishing. The ESO Very Large Telescope, the world's most advanced optical ground-based astronomical facility, is located about 100 km north of Taltal on the 2600-metre Cerro Paranal. Since the beginning of the construction of Paranal Observatory in the 1990s, the Municipality of Taltal and ESO have established a collaborative relationship, developing projects for the benefit of the whole community.
